Supriya Sule advocates compulsory voting
The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and Baramati MP Supriya Sule today stressed up on the provision of compulsory voting in all elections. She claims that this clause will help to strengthen democracy.
THE NATIONALIST Congress Party (NCP) leader and Baramati MP Supriya Sule today stressed provision of compulsory voting in all elections. She claims that this clause will help to strengthen democracy by inducing the participation of more and more people in the voting exercise.

The young leader said that, she has started the discussion in this regard with all party MPs in New Delhi and they have responded positively to this move. She introduced a bill seeking compulsory voting during elections in parliament last year. “We have completed our task, now it is up to the government to check the feasibility and technical aspects of compulsory voting,”

Sule further added that despite being the largest democracy in the world, unfortunately less than half the people participate in the voting exercise. Specifically youths do not show interest in voting. Just like awareness about our fundamental rights there should be awareness about the importance of voting. It will encourage a feeling of responsibility in every citizen and will change the face of our democracy. For that compulsory voting may be the best option.

More voting will help the spontaneous progress of our nation, she said. About the provision of punishment to those who do not vote despite it being compulsory, the NCP MP said the talks on it are at the preliminary stage. But she said we should ensure that maximum people come out to vote, encouraged by positive campaigning.

It is to be noted that the Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi had open the debate on compulsory voting a month ago. He had demanded to make it compulsory in Gujarat. However, the chief election commissioner had refused the request on technical grounds.
