Thomas succeeds Pratyush Sinha, a 1969 batch IAS officer of Bihar cadre, who demitted office yesterday after a four-year tenure as CVC. The Prime Minister yesterday defended the appointment of Thomas, saying 'We have done the right thing.'
BJP HAS protested against the appointment of telecom secretary P J Thomas as the next Chief Vigilance Commissioner (CVC). Sushma Swaraj, who was one of the three members of the committee that recommended Thomas had opposed his elevation to the top post.
As a mark of protest, Swaraj also did not attend the swearing in ceremony of P J Thomas. She even went an step further when she spoke to President Pratibha Patil and raised her disapproval in the selection of the Kerala cadre IAS officer. On the developments, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad said it was a conscious decision taken by Swaraj to boycott the ceremony inspite of concerns expressed by other leaders in BJP.
The BJP opposed the selection of Thomas on the ground that an enquiry into the spectrum case involves his one time boss, telecom minister A Raja. Thomas' name also figured in Palm oil scam in Kerala. The selection of Thomas was done over two other candidates — Bijoy Chatterjee, who served as a Secretary in the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, and S Krishnan, who retired as Fertiliser Secretary last month. The Selection Panel consisted of Prime Minister and Home Minister besides the Leader of Opposition. The Prime Minister yesterday defended the appointment of Thomas, saying “We have done the right thing. We have chosen the best candidate out of the list of three.” Thomas succeeds Pratyush Sinha, a 1969 batch IAS officer of Bihar cadre, who demitted office yesterday after a four-year tenure as CVC.
