Swaraj, who visited the stampede site, said that the issue would be raised in the Parliament. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj also asked the stakeholders to come out with a concrete plan to avoid such mishaps.

Sushma Swaraj told reporters that there is no doubt that the state government has failed to take proper steps to prevent the tragedy and if the government and the concerned agencies had not neglected the report on a similar tragedy that struck Pampa in 1999, the mishap could have been avoided.

Atleast 102 people were killed and 60 injured in a stampede while returning from the Sabarimala shrine when a jeep crashed into the pilgrims at Pulumedu in Kerala's Idukki district. Most of the victims who perished were from Tamil Nadu, Andhdra Pradesh and Karnataka. They were returning home through the forest route after the Makarajyoti darshan, considered a celestial phenomenon, at the hill shrine of Lord Ayyappa.
