Sustenance of mankind depends on environmentally sustainable mining practices: President Mukherjee
Presenting the National Geoscience Awards-2014 on April 5, President of India, Pranab Mukherjee said that geo-scientists had the responsibility to create greater awareness about the importance of conservation and sustainability along with their research work.
He added that though natural resources had to be explored, extracted, refined and processed for national building, but at the same time, there was a need to 'understand that sustenance of mankind depends only on environmentally sustainable mining practices'.

Congratulating the awardees for their outstanding achievements and contributions in the field of fundamental and applied geosciences, mining and allied areas, President Mukherjee said, "Availability and use of minerals in any country has been one of the factors determining self-sufficiency of its economy."

"The exploration of mineral resources in the country requires a greater thrust with an even greater caution. As the search for the near surface deposits have reached a point of saturation, the geoscientists of the country now face the crucial challenge of finding deep seated and concealed mineral resources," stated the President.

He advised the scientists to focus on exploration of the offshore mineral resources and rare earth elements with the environmental sustainability concern in mind.
