On Friday, a Myanmar Divisional court in Yangon accepted to hear an appeal by detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi against her conviction that has confined the Nobel Peace laureate to a further 18 months in prison.
ACCORDING TO media reports, a Myanmar Divisional court in Yangon has agreed to hear an appeal by detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi against her conviction that extended her house arrest by 18 months.
A district court had convicted Suu Kyi for violating the terms of her earlier detention after an American, John Yettaw, intruded at her home.
She was sentenced to three years in prison with hard labour, but the sentence was commuted to 18 months of house arrest. Suu Kyi said that her conviction was unfair. Now the date for the appeal to be heard by the Divisional Court in Yangon is Sept 18.
The Nobel peace prize winner has been detained for the last 14 years for her non-violent political movement but this time she was convicted on criminal charges.
