Swaraj Abhiyan's four-day 'Farmers' Rights Yatra' flagged off in Tamil Nadu
In an attempt to give voice to the farmers of this country, Swaraj Abhiyan's 'Ulavar Urimai Payanam: Farmers' Rights Yatra' was flagged off yesterday from Vedharanyam, Tamil Nadu.

The 4-day yatra has also received support from various social organisations such as NAPM, ASHA and Ekta Parishad. The yatra will cover seven drought affected districts of Tamil Nadu.

Covering more than 220 km, the Yatra travelled through Ayakaran, Puthukudi, Thanikottai Kadai, Pranthiyakarai, Vepancheri, Idumbavanam, Muthupettai, Thambikootai, Pattukootai, Pappanaadu and Kannanthankudi.

A statement issued by Swaraj Abhiyan said, "Farmers' Rights Yatra is being organised to make farmers aware of their Constitutional Rights in drought situations."

At the many meetings held at the villages covered in the Yatra, Swaraj Abhiyan leaders, led by Yogendra Yadav, who is also the founder of Jai Kisan Aandolan, provided information to farmers about various laws meant for protecting them such as the National Food Security Act, MNREGA, Crop Input Subsidy and Loan Rescheduling and reasserted the farmers' right to avail relief under National Food Security Act.

The organisation also claimed that the Supreme Court orders are being openly flouted by not providing mid-day meals to school children during summer vacation.

Farmers from Tamil Nadu had held a long protest at Jantar Mantar recently but received no response from either the Central government or the state government. The farmers have threatened to resume protests in case they are not provided relief. Tamil Nadu, despite facing the worst drought in the last 140 years has not been included in the list of drought-affected states.
