Swine flu alert:16 deaths reported in the last 1 week, Kerala, Pune affected
Inspite of creating India's indigenous vaccine against H1N1, sixteen deaths were reported since last one week. Kerala topped the number with 10 deaths being reported from the state, quotes a health ministry official.
THE ONSET onset of monsoon did bring some respite from the heat, but it is taking a toll on the human life in the four southern states and Maharashtra. Inspite of creating India's indigenous vaccine against H1N1, sixteen deaths were reported since last one week. Kerala topped the number with 10 deaths being reported from the state, quotes a health ministry official and 16 deaths have been reported from the affected states including Kerals. So far, Kerala is the worst hit state with 222 positive cases of swine flu reported.

In Pune, the number of swine flu cases and people succumbing to the infection is also showing an upward trend. Post the onset of monsoon, 143 cases were registered in May and 214 cases were registered in June. In order to prevent the number of people falling prey to this virus, a high level meeting was called under the Minister of State (Maharashtra), Suresh Shetty.

Taking a note of the rising numbers, a health official said, “ All health officials involved in mitigating the spread of swine flu have been asked to be on high alert and follow all government advisories to keep the virus in check during the monsoon”.

According to Siddhartha Dalvi, a Pune based micro-biologist, “ Influenza epidemics in colder countries are usually seen in the winter. In tropical countries like India, epidemics occur throughout the year. In fact, there is a propensity towards more outbreaks in the monsoon, due to a combination of high humidity, relatively cooler temperatures and indoor crowding of people”.

The number of people succumbing to this virus in south India inspite of Tamiflu being introduced was blamed directly on the lack of awareness. Till date, 2 deaths have been reported from Maharashtra and 22 people have been tested positive mainly from Mumbai and Pune.
