Switch-over to tuition to reap moolah
Is taking tuition a good career option for young graduates? With mushrooming of tuition centres across Chennai and other prominent cities, parents of city lads of class 3 to class 12 have to make a beeline to get admission with best coaching centres for their wards who found their school admission was relatively less taxing.

As schools in Chennai reopened after summer holidays this week, it was indeed tiring time for parents of wards particularly in 10th, 11th and 12th standards of CBSE board in finding the best tuition centre for the core subjects ? Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Biology.

Not satisfied with the coaching their wards are getting at schools, parents go for hunting for the best tutor in Chennai, and KK Nagar and T Nagar have emerged as the prominent tuition hubs for NCERT coaching as well as NEET, JEE and other competitive exams.

With average annual fee for a subject hovering around INR 15-20 thousand and each class housing at least 40 students, there has been a tremendous demand for good tutors who have great subject knowledge and experience in coaching NCERT, JEE and NEET syllabuses.

Sunita Agarwal, who has enrolled her daughter at a prominent coaching centre for eleventh standard in KK Nagar, says, "I spend almost a month during the summer holidays to find the best coaching centre for my daughter as she has taken science in her eleventh. I have enrolled her for Maths, Physics and Chemistry for INR 60,000 per annum. Though this is a huge sum for us, we can't take the chance as seats usually get filled within two to three days in these coaching centres."

Mohan Reddy, who is working at a coaching centre in Ashok Nagar says, "I am teaching maths for three hours a day for class 11 and 12 students. I get an income of Rs 60,000 per month. There are tutors in nearby institutes who get more than a lakh salary for teaching NEET and JEET aspirants. I was earlier working in an IT company in Hyderabad. Since the money is good here, I switched to teaching and I am very happy and less stressed now."

With an average of 40 students in a batch, it's about Rs 8 lakh per year each coaching centre get. "We have around 20 batches for three subjects. So, the income would be about Rs 1.5 core on an average per year," says Sriram Manoj, who left his engineer job with a prominent automobile company in Bangalore and now teaches class 9 and 10 CBSE students at a tuition centre in KK Nagar.

However, not all are good, and some of them are less promising and get negative reviews from parents and students. "It is pathetic that teachers in prominent schools are less qualified and not able to teach subjects properly. This forces us to look for good tutors for our wards who are writing board exams. I don't want my son to get less marks and lose out in the competition. So, I have to engage him a good tutor," says Lakshmi Narayan, mother of a class 12 student who studies at a leading school in Mogappair.

With our new education policy still to address quality of education, these coaching centres will continue to reap benefits and fleece the gullible parents.
