Syrian violence escalates, UN action anticipated
Syria is in the grip of another uprising against the repressive regime of President Bashar Assad. The last two days have seen a blood bath by the forces loyal to Assad on the protesters.

IN THE latest firing by the government forces in Syria, at least 74 people have been killed in the last two days, as reported by media outlets. Both the protesters and some residential areas have been targeted by the forces in Homs city. Among those killed there are many children.

Taking notice of the ruthless killing of protesters in Syria, the U.N. Security Council held a closed-door meeting to discuss the crisis, which could lead to a step toward a possible U.N. action against Assad. Reacting to the UN's latest move, Damascus said that Syria would not accept any international interference in its internal affairs.

According to UNICEF, about four hundred children below the age of 18 have been killed so far by the forces and military actions have also led to sectarian divide in the country and defections from the army.

Surprisingly, the world community has been relatively silent in terms of putting pressure on Syria to not to come down hard on its own people. If Assad continues to govern in a ruthless manner, the day is not far, as seen in the Arab Spring, that people will revolt and oust him from power.
