Taliban Rebels becoming bold, bolder, and now boldest
The Taliban in Afghanistan have become so bold and daring that they attacked the embassy and a NATO base in Kabul. Agreed, all attackers were killed but the Taliban are up to something big.
TALIBAN TERRORISTS attacked the American Embassy and a NATO post in Kabul on September 13. I am not surprised. Are you? Anyway, you should not be. Luckily, they were beaten back but shops lost some business. I agree that the reformed Taliban with training in housekeeping, gardening etc will be an asset to the family in foreign land.
It is brick by brick that an edifice is built. Likewise, to gain initiative and then supremacy, a force has to work hard, work over a period of time with dedication and always keep the aim in sight.
AIM AND MAINTENANCE OF AIM: DO THE NATO OFFICERS AND SOLDIERS HAVE CLARITY OF AIM
If the aim of undertaking a job is clear, you will put your heart and soul in it to achieve the aim. However, if like Distant Drums you may hear or you may not hear, if a GI or a Jawan is not clear about the aim, how is he or she going to achieve it? The AIM of posting in Afghanistan is to locate and destroy both the Al Qaida and the Taliban. Why the hell should an American G.I. travel around half of the world to fight against the twin enemy in Afghanistan? Well, the reason is that if you do not destroy your enemy on a foreign soil, he will infiltrate into your homeland and may harm your wife and children. Fighting against a cruel and deadly enemy like terrorists may cause more bloodshed of non-combatants and thus damage the morale of the fighting man. Loss of property is a dampener of enthusiasm. So kill the Islamist-terrorist without being killed. Strike first before he can draw his revolver or let the barrel of his AK 47 point towards you.
Maintenance of AIM is equally important. The AIM is set but if a soldier or a platoon level officer wishes to change the aim every now and then, it will indeed be confusing for G.Is or plain soldiers. If the fighting man is confused, he would be written off in due course of time. Thus the bayonet strength of a unit will go down. After sometime the enemy will find out the reason why NATO attacks are not so deadly? Moreover, the plain soldier, if married, is bound to think of his wife and kids. If a bachelor, his sweetheart should be in the front row.
MORALE SHOULD BE HIGH
Indeed, it is heartening to know that the last of the attacking terrorists has been killed little while ago. It would be a good idea to take a cursory look at the important factors that raise the morale of combat troops. The first and the foremost is the mental makeup of the combat troops. Are the fighting troops convinced of the cause they are fighting for? If, the answer is yes, you may take it that half the battle is won. If the combat soldiers think that they are unnecessarily risking their lives and limbs for something not worth fighting for, the battle is as good as lost. The Vietnam War is the most brilliant example of the doctrine stated heretofore. The American soldiers, sailors and airmen were not at all convinced that it was their war. They blamed the civil leadership for the loss of American lives. The US armed forces suffered a massive defeat and in the final phase of withdrawal ran helter- skelter to save their lives against the determined attack of the Vietcong and the North Vietnam soldiers.
The intervention of India in the Sri Lanka’s war on the Tamils fighting for freedom, was an unfortunate decision of the then Indian Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi. The Indian Army fought against those Tamil freedom fighters that they had trained and armed on the soil of Tamilnadu and Sri Lanka. The morale of the Indian Army was low. They lost men, material and eventually the battle. Unfortunately the decision making Prime Minister later lost his life in a terrorist attack by the same outfit, LTTE that he tried to exterminate and failed.
LEADERSHIP is another important factor that makes soldiers win or lose. If the leader, that is the commander is bold, caring and competent he would win the war by motivating his soldiers to fight till the last round and last man. On the other hand, it the commander is incompetent, cares for self and not the Service, takes no care of combat troops and neglects their welfare, you may take it that he would definitely lose the battles and the war too. The bad commander must be relieved of command post haste so that lives of soldiers are saved.
INDOCTRINATION OF TALIBAN
The Taliban rebels are brainwashed by commanders and religious leaders at various levels every now and then. Once a week on Fridays, after the prayers are over, the Mullah or the religious leader delivers a sermon exhorting the faithful followers of Islam to fight for Islam. Generally speaking, they paint a poor picture of western people in general and Americans in particular, calling them Islam’s foe. The hatred for the white enemy is build up step by step till it reaches crescendo. The time is ripe to launch a bold attack on the US embassy or any other American outfit and the NATO bases. The motivation of the Taliban terrorists is so high that they do not have a second thought about sacrificing their lives for the Deen or the religion given to them by Allah and interpreted by Prophet Mohammad.
The biggest source of motivation of the Taliban terrorist is the promise made by the Deen that those who sacrifice their lives for the cause championed by the Prophet will find a place in Heaven that is located on cloud Seven. Every new arrival in that Heaven, read Taliban terrorist slain in action, will be given seventy houris, pretty women from any standards who will serve wine and keep their attractive eyes low to look prettier. The Taliban terrorist fights against Satanic forces of America and Europe with determination and dies on hope of entering the alluring place where wine and women will be at beck and call. What the Taliban terrorist missed in this world will be available on demand in Heaven. This is the strongest psychological motivation of a combatant and it has not failed their commanders so far.
Will the NATO find an antidote to this poison? Not by 2014 by any reckoning. Thereafter the NATO leaves Afghanistan for good and may say: After us, the Deluge.
