AT LEAST five people were killed and several injured when suicide bombers, believed to be Taliban members, attacked the justice ministry in Afghanistan’s capital Kabul, on Wednesday (February 11) morning.
Heavily armed gunmen stormed the high security ministry and fired indiscriminately on the security forces. Five people are believed to have been killed and several injured in the attacks, which rocked north Kabul in the morning.
Police said that two fidayeens and five heavily armed militants barged into the Afghan justice ministry and targeted the prison directorate there. Taliban militants have already claimed responsibility for the attacks and warned that more could be in the offing.
During the attack, a suicide bomber reportedly blew himself inside the government building after a gun battle ensued near the palace of president Hamid Karzai. An official of the Afghan justice ministry said that some of the gunmen are still hiding in the building and exchanging intermittent fire with the security forces.
A number of suicide attacks have been executed by Taliban terrorists in Kabul and analysts said that the latest was designed to send a message to the NATO forces in the country.
By attacking Kabul, Taliban wants to tell that they can execute an attack anywhere in the country and expose the vulnerability of the security apparatus, they added.
