Tamil Nadu bans educational institutions from participating in 'Classmate Spell Bee' contest
The School Education Department of Tamil Nadu has banned all Educational Institutions in Tamil Nadu from participating in "Classmate Spell Bee" competition for which the Title Partner is ITC Classmate as a response to the complaint preferred by The State Convener of Tamilnadu People?s Forum for Tobacco Control (TNPFTC).

The Government Order clearly states that "No educational institution is permitted to participate through its students or its faculties in the events/ sponsorship/ gift/ prizes/ scholarship or any other activities that promote any tobacco company either through the use of (tobacco) company or brand name, emblem, trademark, logo, or trade insignia or any other distinctive features connected with its tobacco or non-tobacco products or services in such a way that the tobacco products and the non-tobacco products or service are likely to be associated."

Stating the above mentioned G.O. 242, the School Education Department has directed a letter to the all the Educational Institutions of Tamil Nadu instructing them to strictly follow the Government Order and not participate in the Classmate Spell Bee competition.

A spelling bee is a competition in which contestants are asked to spell a broad selection of words, usually with a varying degree of difficulty. The "Classmate Spell Bee" competition has been conducted for 5 seasons and all over India. This year their aim is to conduct India's largest school spelling competition.

When the news about the "Classmate Spell Bee" competition- Season 6 came about, The State Convener of Tamil Nadu People's Forum for Tobacco Control (TNPFTC) sent out a letter to the State School Education Department referring to the G.O. 242 and highlighting the point that through the competition ITC is promoting its name and is on its way to fulfil its mission by covering most of the schools in India.

The State School Education Department has thus issued the letter banning all Educational Institutions from participating in "Classmate Spell Bee" competition in reference to the G.O.- 242

TNPFTC is a network of individuals, professional associations, and institutions who are actively working towards tobacco control.
