Tamil Nadu to host international conference on "Emerging Trends in English and Foreign Language Teaching"
A one-day International Conference on "Emerging Trends in English and Foreign Language Teaching" is going to be organized by Division of Social Sciences & Languages, School of Advanced Sciences, Vellore Institute of Technology, Chennai, on February 05, 2019.

Besides the paper presentations, there will be two lead speakers and resource persons . Professor Kimberly Hughes, from Southern Illinois University; and Emmanuel Samson, Attaché for French at the French Institute in India will conduct workshops on language teaching.

Conference Themes consist of the following language teaching areas: Innovative Practices Inside and Outside the Classroom; New Technology and Digital Teaching of Language and Literature; Language for Specific Purposes (LSP);  Methods, Approach and Strategies; Language for Occupational Purposes (LOP);  Interpersonal and Intercultural Communication; Curriculum Development and Material Production; Language Testing and Evaluation; Language Teacher Education; and  Language Teachers as Agents of Social Change.

In India, English has been introduced as a compulsory language from grade one in most states and at the senior secondary level, prominent European languages and Chinese have been introduced as elective subjects.

Teaching of English requires properly trained teachers with communicative skills and there is utter shortage of quality and quantity of English teachers in our country.  Often, teaching English as a Foreign Language is meant for students with different first languages and local dialects.
