Tarun Gogoi-led Congress set to retain power in Assam
Tarun Gogoi led Congress is all set to retain power in Assam for the third time as opposition AGP and BJP face a rout in the polls. The sweeping victory has surprised even the Congress as it did not expect such a massive mandate.
CONGRESS IS all set to retain power for the third time in Assam as the party is leading in 78 out of 123 Assembly seats in the state. Assam it seems has voted for Tarun Gogoi's political acumen and leadership, thus giving him a chance to become the chief minister for the third time on the trot.

Chief Minister Gogoi, who has ruled Assam for the last ten years, is credited with bringing Assam back from the brink of a financial collapse as well bringing a semblance of peace in the state. He has also been instrumental in bringing various militant organisation to the negotiating table and it seems has been rewarded suitably at the hustings.

Speaking to media, the Assam CM said that economic development and growth in the state were the main reason that Congress had been voted back to power. He also asserted that his government was clean and corruption free.

He also told a television channel that the verdict in Assam was a clear expression of confidence against the alleged corruption charges levelled against his government.

The Congress is moving towards a majority in the state with both Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and BJP facing rout in the state. Both parties were leading in 9 seats each, till last reports came in.

AGP leader Prafulla Kumar Mahanta, who contested from two seats lost to Rockybul Hussain of Congress from Samaguri. However, Mahanta is leading in Barhampur.

Pallab Lochan Das of Congress is ahead in Bihali, in Gohpur, Monika Bora (Congress) is leading, speaker Tanka Bahadur Rai (Barchalla) and Deputy Speaker Pranati Phukan (Naharkatia) are also leading in their respective constituencies.
