Tashan makes viewers gasp 'To Shun'
Tashan, released on April 25, boasts of a major star cast Kareena, Anil, Akshay and Saif. But the movie fails to hold the attention of the audience. Vijay Krishna Acharya, writer of the hit 'Dhoom' series, fails miserably as a director.

IT HAPPENED with Ram Gopal Verma’s factory. Now it seems to be happening with Yashraj Films too. The assembly-line products (read films) are falling like nine pins.

What does Tashan mean? Tashan is slang for English word style.

The point is that all style and no substance don’t make good cinema and this is exactly where Tashan falters.

The story is pretty simple. Pooja (Kareena Kapoor) works for Bhaiyyaji (Anil Kapoor). Bhaiyyaji wants to learn English and so Pooja hires the services of Jimmy alias Jitender (Saif Ali Khan). Jimmy falls head over heels in love with Pooja, and Pooja uses him to siphon money off Bhaiyyaji. To recover his booty, Bhaiyyaji gets Bachchan Pandey (Akshay Kumar) on the job.

  • Why does Pooja cheat on Bhaiyyaji?
  • Why does Pooja use Jimmy?
  • How does Jimmy avenge himself?

These few questions form the narrative of the story. The biggest question, however, is: Is the audience interested?

No, as was evident from the response in the theatre.

Vijay Krishna Acharya, who makes his debut as a director, wrote the hit ’Dhoom’ series for Yashraj films, but he is terribly weak as a director more so as a story-teller.

The film should have a pace that really sets the adrenaline pumping; however, this film moves at snail’s pace!

In fact, it is only the magnetic-presence of Kumar that saves the film a bit (he is bound to win accolades for his character as Bachchan Pandey in Hindi-belt).

One just couldn’t fathom how a writer can choose such a flimsy script for his debut. Though, he has justified Kareena’s act by giving the back-story, but by then the audience has already lost interest. So much that even the much touted Kareena’s bikini appearance fizzles down. Yes, she fails to recreate Esha’s ’Dhoom’ act or Bipasha’s ’Dhoom 2’ act. But it’s not her fault. It’s the director’s fault.

Of the performances, Kumar wins hands down. He is the show-stealer (if there’s any!). Khan is fine and Kareena fabulous, just watch her in Chaliya…Chaliya song, drooling hot! However, Anil as Bhaiyaji, it seems, tries hard to be ruthless. He is a let down; probably owing to weak characterisation. Sanjay Mishra fails to recreate the One Two Three magic of Pinto; I guess, he shares the same screen name here!

Rest of the cast is just about fine.

Background music could have been better. Action is good, particularly Bachchan Pandey’s action sequence in the fort.

In the end, Tashan is a disappointing fare that makes viewer gasp “To Shun”.

TASHAN, truly falls flat on its expectations.though the look of the film is fantastic n songs r superb, the film fails to live up to its expectations. one was expecting very much from this 'dhoom'weriter turned director vijay krishna acharya, but he really dissappoints.... the screenplay is very poor as well as direction.... though, the film has all the hottest n top actors of bollywood, vijay misuses them n fails to extract best perfomances from them... its not the actors fault to be part of this film but the director has to be blamed for such a big failurre........akshay kumar,is only the saving grace of the film..the moment he appears onscreen, the film picks up momentum.he is perfect as bachhan pandey......kareena kapoor as pooja singh is perfect casting as femme fatal..she is looking every bit of an angel...she has managed to give a good perfomance..... after jab we met,one was expecting a perfomance oriented role from her but its ok its not her fault......she's good.anil kapoor as bhaiyajji in the first half of the film provides comic relief though some dialouges r irritating.... in the second half he's a bit scary...he has also done a good job.well, coming to saif ali khan, less the said the better.though he looks stylish he is wasted as jinny cliff..those who have seen race, feels very disturbed by seeing saif in this film..over all, tashan is meant for time pass...one has not put logic in this film.......the songs, locationsetc. make ur bucks worth a watch...
