Tata launches Photon TV
Available in postpaid format, viewers of TATA Photon Plus would receive near live TV feed, with an eight to 10 second delay. Those who are currently subscribed to Photon plus can access the Photon TV service by simply downloading an application.
TATA TELESERVICES Limited (TTSL) on Wednesday, December 2, launched its new service Photon TV, a mobile TV service run by high speed broadband with which users can access various television channels on desktops and laptops. TATA has become the first service provider for this form of mobile TV.

A user would at first be able to view 40 channels with the use of a TATA Photon Plus data card, at the speed of 3.1 MBPS which would cover sports, entertainment, animation and certain regional channels.  The company has promised that it would increase this channel bouquet up to 90 channels in the coming future.

Available in the post paid format, viewers of TATA Photon Plus would receive near live television feed, with an invariable eight to 10 second delay. Those who are currently subscribed to TATA Photon plus can access the Photon TV service by simply downloading an application.

All considered, this service is still an expensive one, both monetarily and compared to the amount of usefulness. The unlimited offer available for Photon TV, ensures that there is insignificant capacity for normal internet access and browsing. Further, this mobile TV, in terms of costs, is more expensive than a DTH (Direct to Home) connection, which is available for Rs 1,500, with a six month package for channels thrown in. This comes about to be just Rs 250 for access to over 140 channels.

Till now, some mobile services have been trying to provide mobile TV to their subscribers. For instance, Reliance communications offers nearly 34 channels to their subscribers on the CDMA platform. Here, however, there is a time delay of 30 seconds and the quality is not very good, as it is on a 2G platform. The buffering time is also long as the connectivity is merely 145 kbps.
