THE FAMED Tata Nano has finally begun to hit the roads. Tata Motors has delivered 2,475 units of the Nano car within 15 days after it was rolled out commercially. The car is termed as the world’s cheapest car with the base variant cost starting from Rs 1 lakh (manufacturer prices). The cost of the car would go up to Rs 1,75,000 on the high end with air conditioning facility.

Ratan Tata, the chairman of Tata Motors and the person who envisioned the Nano five years ago had handed over the keys of the first commercially available Nano car on July 17 to a Mumbai resident.

Tata Motors in its annual report has claimed that it will be able to deliver up to 60,000 Nano cars by July 2010. The one lakh units mark may be achieved once the production plant at Sanad, Gujarat becomes operational. It is to have a production capacity of 2.5 lakh units annually.

Tata Nano has attracted the attention of the automotive world after being classified as the world’s cheapest automobile. Built to cater to the ultra low cost segment, the model has had no rivals to date and is unlikely to be challenged in the near future.
