Taxi Union in Mumbai threatens strike: 12 lakh people to be affected
Mumbai Taximen's Union may go on a strike if their demands of increase in taxi fares are not met within the stipulated time. The last time the fares were revised was in 2010.

ABOUT 12 lakh people in Mumbai travel by taxis to reach various destinations for their work and other purposes. These commuters could face major problems if the demands of the Mumbai Taximen’s Union are not met, as they have threatened to go on a strike. A L Quadros, General Secretary for the union, while speaking to merinews.com said, “we have demanded that the taxi fares has to be increased to Rs 20 from its present scenario of Rs 16. For every additional km that the taxi travels the fares have to be increased to Rs 12 from what it is currently charged (Rs 10).”

The union was compelled to take this measure after the prices of CNG rose by Rs 1.63 per kilogram since 17th February. The union has sent a proposal to the concerned authorities to look into their demands. Hence, a meeting has been scheduled for February 24 over the issue. A L Quadros is very positive about the meeting and expects their demands to be met. But, if not, Quadros says, the union, “we will have to go on a strike”. They might take the official call about the strike on Monday, February 27, if required.

It was on 24th June 2010 that the fares for Taxi were last revised. Times have changed in the last two years. Mumbai, like many other cities in India, has become more expensive with the standard of living on the rise. Hence, in order to meet demand of current living needs, the fares also should be increased. Quadros said, “These fares are very outdated in today’s world”.

Akash Roy, who was born and brought up in Mumbai, considers taxi to be a very important form of transportation. Sometimes, he also travels by taxi to various locations, in spite of possessing a car. He said, “If there is a taxi strike in Mumbai, it would create problems for people living in the town, as they do not have any rickshaws for transportation”. Those travelling to the airports will also face lots of problems as these cabs are the lifeline for many a people in the city, especially for the office goers.
