Teachers' Day: PM concerned at poor levels of student learning
On the eve of Teachers' Day, Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, while addressing the National Awardees, paid homage to Dr. Radhakrishnan calling him a great teacher, philosopher and educationist of present times.

WHILE CONGRATULATING the awardees, the PM wished the teaching community every success and fulfillment in life and vocation both. "Education provides the skills and competencies necessary for economic development, it empowers citizens to fully participate in the political processes and it imparts values that foster social cohesion and national unity. A well educated population, is essential for the economic and social progress of any country," PM said in his address.

Singh expressed his concern for poor levels of student learning and stressed for a shift in strategy from a focus on inputs, access and enrolment to classroom processes and school management. "Participation of the community and parents would be essential in this process, so that they can be satisfied with the quality of teaching," he added.

Terming teachers as a critical factor of quality education, Singh stressed the need to make them an integral part of policy-making, governance and management, as also of day-to-day instructional strategies and decision making.

"The empowerment of teachers that includes real opportunity for them to share policy perspectives and decision-making will have to be the key component of the educational reform process," emphasized Singh.

While wishing all teachers in the country a very meaningful and satisfying engagement with children, Singh urged them to build in children a commitment to the values of democracy, and the values of equality, social justice, freedom, secularism, and respect for human dignity.

yesterday i saw one piece of news on a channel about the teachers are being utilised in non-academic activities like census, election, pulse polio and other works in states like UP and Bihar. is there any solution to this. Are teachers the only community to do these jobs. Y the government does not appoint people for such jobs.

the education system is also entangled in corruption. I hope the PM have noticed how bad the conditions are rural schools where students sit on earth and have no basic facilities. rather than giving ceremonial speeches he must act.
