Teachers in rural Rajasthan exposed to wordless picture reading to develop imagination and recall skills on Book Lover's Day
Book Lover's Day was observed as part of on-going rural teachers' training workshop since August 3 at Jhilay in Tonk district of Rajasthan. A session was held on wordless picture reading lessons and dual code lessons with minimum words and a lot of visual codes. The observance to show interest in book and learn about active reading skills, it was said.

"Reading skills of students have gone down and it is being said that a grade eight students in rural Rajasthan cannot read grade two book. Picture reading has almost become non-existent. The issue of picture-less grade ten English textbook was raised at the training of teachers being held by CULP-NGO that is running Pehchan project in the area for elementary school education of girls as well as grade ten compensatory educations for girls at risk of failure in their first public examination," said the coordinator of the project.

A wordless drawing on the chalkboard, creating and transacting wordless reading task sheet or wordless mini book created with drawings and pictures lead to active and effective way of learner engagement with imagination, said the resource person.

Pointing out objects and naming lead them to name develops recognition skill or asking students to point out objects when you state characteristics or naming it as you point out objects talked about could be some of the activities as a part of reading wordless pictures.

Wordless picture books are an interesting way to engage students in the storytelling process, event description, composition of the subject in the picture, it was stressed.

As a demonstration of reading the wordless visual, a sketch on showing violence, as shown in the inset visual, was used to know about different kinds of violent acts and relate its reading to a lesson of language textbook of grade ten prescribed in schools of Rajasthan.
