Teachers prefer in-service education and training with team teaching
There is a rising concern about the dismal performance of the education system and falling standards of classroom instruction in our country. Some half hearted attempts are made through in-service trainings but to little avail since they are organized as a patch work through invited talks.

Often training sessions are dry and dull for the trainees. It was thought why not try out two-trainer sessions as team work to energize sessions during a teacher training held in Bhopal which was organized last month.

In the 'two-trainer team in-service education' session, for the primary teachers at Bal Bhawan School in Bhopal of Madhya Pradesh an opportunity was afforded since primary teachers are supposed to teach all subjects. An inclusive training session involving two trainers to work as a team was taken up.

In the in-service training organized before reopening of the school, both the motivational and classroom instruction aspects were combined. The emphasis was on activity-based learning. The process of activity-based learning was highlighted as performing the activity; analysis of the activity; constructing and codifying the knowledge; and practice of what has been learned.

The participants were cautioned that activities are not to be for the heck of activities but for conscious cognitive development and learning of the content. The learning process was understood through a paper folding activity and the support system for learning was emphasized.

Hands on activities in science, mathematics and language were taken up. Since teaching was seen as a teacher's act dealing with what to teach; how to teach and with what material to teach. Some learning material for creating a print rich classroom was created.

Not only had the trainees preferred team training and the feedback from the head teacher of the venue school validated the transfer of teaching to the classroom also. Many educators also hold that team teaching is better than a single teacher handling a session since it becomes a coordinate lively performance of two role actors in the classroom.
