Teaching 'don't get raped' instead of 'don't rape' is outrageous
The molestation of a teenaged girl in public by some 20 odd gruesome men, who had the audacity to face the camera while ravaging the helpless girl, is by far the most disgusting thing that I have had the misfortune to see on television last night.

NEARLY A hundred people watched with sheer shamelessness a teenaged girl being dragged and slapped in public on a Guwahati street. This is a society where I have been brought up. Shame on all those people who in the lit-up sacred corners of their homes, called the "Mandirs/ Temples", hail goddesses and ask for what not but when it comes to saving one from getting disgraced by bunch of animals, chose to stand back muted.

In my view, the reporter who captured all this for good 30 minutes is no human either and is just as sick as the ones who watched this mayhem as mute spectators. Given the fact, he wanted enough footage as a proof for the police but 30 minutes, really. Was it not his responsibility as a human being to stop such a heinous act Or worse, could he not have intervened after taping it all for few minutes? Had it been his sister/ girlfriend/ wife, would he chose to continue recording the footage like he did in this case.

The police as usual came late and in their defense, "came just in time before a rape could take place". Oh thank goodness!! Three days since the incident and only four people have been arrested while the rest are still absconding.

What is gorier, is hearing some people make some dim-witted comments on national TV like, "The girl must have had some fault too". "Girls must not travel alone at night". This is such a shame that we are living in a society that teaches - "Don’t get raped, instead of ‘don’t rape’.

From officials to politicians, everyone is "now looking into the matter" but what would that lead to - instant bails or may be few days in jail. What after that I think we have stopped evolving as a society altogether.

While everyone has condemned the beastly behaviour, I wonder, who all for once thought about the agony of that 17-year-old girl? Would she be ever come out of this? Would she ever be able to step alone out of her house again, leave alone having male friends. My heart goes out for the kid and her family.

The act is so horrible that it not only makes me super angry but scared as well; it could happen to anyone, anywhere and no one would even have the guts to protect you. This is where "Shining India" has come down to; women are not safe, kids fall and die in potholes, old aged people are thrown out of their houses, robbed and killed, people living/walking on the streets get killed because of drunk-driving.

When you wake up to all this every morning, you no longer feel proud of your country and your head sinks in shame, no wonder why so many people even today wish to go abroad and stay there with no intentions of return. They are not at fault; who would want to raise kids in a society where the basic and quintessential need of "security" is lacking. Let’s see if the police can catch the culprits and actually get them behind the bars for good.

Like all, I hope the situation of our country changes or else the good ones will be gone and India would remain as a country full of "criminals".

As Barkha Dutt recently tweeted and i quote "don't tell your girl how to dress, tell your boy how to think." This should be applied to every household as we somehow do tell our daughters that she must cover up and our sons that he can do anything.

I loved the title of the article. That is exactly what the problem of our moral education is.
