Teaching Practice: Book Review
Teaching Practice by P. A. Duminy, et al, is a classic book, for teaching practitioners and teacher educators. The book is written in such a way, that the students of teacher education courses can prepare their own teaching material and practice classroom techniques and skills.

I have found, that the way this book describes the use of the chalkboard for teaching is very practical. I think that if teachers, both at the school and higher education levels, learn and master the skills of use of the chalkboard properly, the quality of classroom instruction will improve tremendously.

The other chapters of the book, co-authored with A. H. MacLarty and N. Maasdorp, provide prospective and working teachers, a global view relevant skills, techniques and aids to classroom instruction. I think that after the transaction of the book, the teacher education students will be able to do their classroom practice and practical learning, with the spirit of the apprentice and self-reflection.

The book that runs into 157 pages, can work as a handbook of both practicing and prospective teachers. The book is of good use for the teachers educators to improve their own classroom transaction of the content, various papers they teach. The book has the potential to improve the practice of educators and help them to demonstrate good teaching methods in a practical way, which they generally shun.

Published by Maskew Miller Longman of South Africa, the book is divided into chapter's such as: Teaching practice and its relation to other disciplines; Educational media; Basic general skills and techniques for making educational; Chalkboard work; Micro-teaching; School practicum; The lesson plan; The observation of lessons; Assessment of lessons along with the exercises.

Inspired by the chapter of 'chalkboard work', I have undertaken a rapid action research on the chalkboard writing of college teachers of Jaipur, and preliminary results indicate that even college teachers require a basic training in pedagogy and effective use of the chalkboard.

The book is well illustrated with simple teacher-friendly visuals and teaching aids. On the whole, the book is extremely useful for teachers and educators both, as resource book as well as a practical book to transfer teaching skills to classroom. The book is recommended for the in-service trainers and resource persons engaged in the capacity building of the teachers.
