THE INDIAN CRICKET team deserved every bit of their defeat. A team that ends up depending on a first-time team like Bermuda to win so that they might make a place for themselves in the super league did not deserve to be part of the World Cup in the first place.
Teams like Australia, South Africa, and New Zealand truly deserve to play. Whenever they participate in big tournaments their seniors rise above their levels and play for their country. The Indian cricketers never play to win but they come to defend. Their attitude and body language is visible in the field from the first over. The shoulders are down, no one tries to pep up the energy levels and fitness is far below par. Lets analyze each player’s attitude in order to find the root cause of their defeat.
Sachin Tendulkar
A big name but no contribution in the recent past. He never performs when he is required to. He succumbs to weak techniques. As a matter of fact, a batsman who does not know about his off stump is always a failure. He touches the ball going outside the off stump and gives catches in slips or getting inner edge to let the bowl go to the stumps. He is also getting LBW very often. He is not the same player he used to be. He is an old man and his health is an issue of concern.
Judgment: Needs to be replaced.
Sehwag
His last two performances could have been good but his failure is the outcome of bad techniques, no footwork and no temperament. He loses rhythm fast and his shot selection according to situation is poor.
Judgment: To be replaced.
Robin Uthappa
He is not performing. He is not able to take advantage of power play. No long innings. Enough chances have already been given.
Judgment: Options for him to be looked at.
Rahul Dravid
Great batsman and performs as well but as a captain, he is extremely weak. He is not aggressive. The modern cricket brain is missing as he gives long spells to bowlers and batsmen find enough time to adjust themselves. He is not a go-getter and has not been able to work as a mentor.
Judgment: To be in team but not as Captain.
Yuvraj Singh
He finishes well, has a fighting attitude, good running between the wickets and a formidable fielder. Has not been able to play long innings but he is a person who inspires other players. He is aggressive and peps up the team members.
Judgment: Should be part of team and can also be looked as Captain.
Sourav Ganguly
Age is catching up and it looks clear from his running between the wickets and a mediocre fielding. Yet he has been performing. He is playing good innings and has changed his attitude towards his colleagues. He is an aggressive player and has also improvised his technique.
Judgment: Shall be in team and should also be looked as Captain.
Mahinder Singh Dhoni
Has performed in the past except for the world cup. He has unique techniques and holds a great record. He is a natural hitter and can accelerate the run rate. He is not a great wicket keeper yet as a package he is a good all rounder.
Judgment: Shall be in team.
Harbhajan
No inputs from him. He is unable to match the potential of spinners belonging to other teams. He is not lethal and cannot control the run flow.
Judgment: Shall be replaced.
Zaheer Khan
He is lethal, spot on and a wicket taker. He also controls the run rate. His come back has been great. He is an important player of the Indian cricket team. His fielding is weak but as a bowler he has international class.
Judgment: Shall be in team.
Munaf Patel
He has struck for India. He is a very young player and dynamic bowler. He is the fastest bowler in the team and is familiar with a number of techniques. He has not got due recognition. He is a great prospect for India.
Judgment: Shall be part of team.
Agarkar
We wonder why he is in the team. He has “Kar” in his name and belongs to Maharashtra, which might be his qualification to be in the team. No performance, low consistency and throws loose ball in between.
Judgment: Shall be replaced immediately.
Anil Kumble
Aging yet has quality. He has performed in the past and is still capable of performing. His batting and fielding is below average but as a bowler he controls runs and can be instrumental in giving the team a vital breakthrough.
Judgment: He shall be in team until a good replacement is found.
Irfan Pathan:
Started a great career but soon lost his rhythm though he scored with bat but bowling performance has been dipping day by day. He can be looked at yet his competition as Zaheer, Munaf, Sreesanth are better.
Judgment: Can be looked as an all rounder if he improves his bowling.
Sreesanth
He is a great performer, fighter, young and energetic player. He has good bowling speed but he was kept away. It is a surprise! Is it because he belongs to South India?
Judgment: Must be part of team.
Greg Chappell
He says he was given a team and it could not perform. It is not his fault. It is crap. He had a lot of say in the selection. He experimented a lot. Experiments should been frozen six months back so that players know their spot. It gives them rhythm and confidence. His coaching abilities have been poor and have been much talked about. As a leader he is irresponsible and must resign.
Judgment: Must be expelled now.
A suggestion to Indian cricket board is to upgrade the status of regional matches within India. Look for talent. Look for the current performer. If a great player is not performing, he shall not be included. He must immediately be replaced, as insecurity of lace will also force them to work harder.
India must have three sub coaches for bowling, batting and fielding. One mentor to show them the path as well as make them see their mistakes. The main coach shall control and plan the strategy to play against each team. Professionalism is required from the players of the likes of Ireland and Bangladesh, which would take us places.
It is foolish not to learn from one’s mistakes and that is what the Indian board, players, coach and selectors have been doing. They are rather busy in making money and signing endorsements. An extensive overhauling is required.
The media must stop crooning about them and should not make them gods just to earn a few bucks. The corporate world must also try to stop cashing on them. This setback has brought huge losses for the corporate.
The game needs to be analyzed from a new angle. Let the Indian cricketers perform consistently only then they shall achieve a status like Australia has been doing for past 20 years. Among one billion people there cannot be one Sachin. It is us who have created the hype around one person to make money. His exclusion would teach lessons to many. The million-dollar question is if the board of directors is willing to do it or not.
