At a workshop on co-processing of hazardous wastes in Chennai, ACC Director, Ulhas Parlikar told about how his company disposed of plastic wastes at their Madhya Pradesh plant, by mixing them with cement making processes.
CEMENT GIANT ACC seems to have found out a good way of disposing plastic garbage. In the words of Ulhas Parlikar, Director, ACC, while responding at a workshop on co-processing of hazardous wastes, said, "(My) company has successfully developed an eco-friendly technology for the safe disposal of plastic waste.” The company’s Kymore plant in Madhya Pradesh has a technology for processing various kinds of plastic waste.
It seems mixing waste plastic materials with cement making processes at temperatures ranging between 1200 - 1400 degrees centigrade forms the key component in this new found technology without side effects.
Plastic wastes constitute around 10 (ten) percent of the total wastes generated everywhere in the country.
Chennai City Corporation Commissioner, Rajesh Lakhoni, said during the workshop proceedings, "We are on the lookout for a simple and eco-friendly technology to either recycle or dispose of plastic garbage generated in the city". It will be interesting to see, if the awareness on the above technology spreads to different parts of the country successfully so that a beginning could be made to at least dispose of some portion (plastics in this case) of the daily garbage generated. It would also be interesting to see if this technology can be moulded in other areas like steel making and aluminium making where also the temperatures go up in the range of 1000 - 1600 degrees centigrade during production processes. Let's hope sooner than later better technologies are available for disposing of the entire wastes generated daily in the best environment friendly manner.
.Minister of Tourism was queried recently as to how Government of India is going to tackle the rubbish issue strewn at many places without proper
collection while attracting tourism. Minister's reply was under the programe called "Athithi Devo Bhava" which means "Guest is God" issues will
be sorted out. Her reply sounded good but the Minister has to walk the talk - The Minister can do well by tying up with various Municipal
corporations to chalk out a good way of getting rid of all the rubbish generated on a daily basis; The Minister can also solicit the help of
leading corporate organisations in the country to help on this project with modern technology and techniques. Stray animals loitering
in the streets also need to be taken care of while solving this issue. India will be able to attract great number of foreign nationals if
the country's roads and streets (every corner) is kept neat and tidy. Therefore, on this important task, Minister of Tourism must do everything
to sort out this long pending issue with the help of one and all concerned. More ideas are welcome to tackle this single more irritant
issue!!!!!
