NOTWITHSTANDING THE global recession, Bihar boasts a vast agro-based export potential due to its heavy dependence on the agriculture and its low cost viability here. The state government has only to take care of its policies regarding use of latest technology in the agriculture sector.

This was the outcome of a workshop held at Bihar Industries Association (BIA) here on Thursday (July 2), where several industry experts discussed things threadbare on the topic of 'Export Awareness: Opportunities and Procedure'.

Vishvjit Dutta, central excise and custom commissioner, said that despite the fact that neighbouring countries like China and other Asian giants including Japan were feeling the heat of recession Indian export market was steadily making progress which showed that export growth potential in the country was immense.

“What policy makers here need to do is to keep tracks open for the low cost factor in the export sector and be prepared to open new markets to give a boost to the exporters,” said Dutta in his inaugural speech.

He added that state government should also need to work on developing cluster markets which would ultimately facilitate the rural exports in Bihar.

Close on the heels of World Bank report which has suggested that state capital Patna is much conducive and cost friendly for the setting up of the business than other big cities like Mumbai, the discussion on the export potential in the state has become quite pertinent.

In the workshop, however, speakers also raised eyebrows over state’s lackluster export policies.

“The export policy in Bihar is not clear cut and it implies several other lacunas which are needed to sort out,” remarked Praveen Sarraf, managing committee member of Federation Indian Export Organisations, a prime export body in the country.

The speakers of the workshop also urged state government’s to promote organic certification with the help of technology. They said it would smooth the progress of export in Bihar.
