From Surabhi to Miley Jab Hum Tum till date, there has been a transition in content where serial makers are no longer afraid to experiment with the kind of content they portray! For example a tabooed topic like sexuality and nudity that was not even openly discussed in the Indian society was now explored on Indian Television. For example, Tara that starred was one of those extreme bold serials that experimented with the led the way with a bold and blatant storyline. A lip-to-lip kiss between Alok Nath and Navneet Nishan sealed the love between them in the serial. Recalling the kissing scene, the kiss was just one aspect of Tara, which thrived on showing women smoking, drinking and wearing minis. It also had tracks of extramarital affair and live-in relationships. This mother of all bold serials was a channel-driver for Zee.

Another serial that explored bold issues was Tony and Deeya Singh’s Banegi Apni Baat! The serial brought about issues like teenage love, pre marital sex, condom, sex and sexuality. The story was woven around this concept and what emerged was four kisses and a lovemaking scene in the most popular serial of its times. The first kiss was quite innocent with Rahul planting one on Riya’s lips just to win a bet. The other kisses happened at a weekend bash where an intoxicated Ritu smooches her boyfriend who is also high, Priya tries to ease Rajat’s pain with a gawky peck on the lip and Rahul kisses Riya passionately to convey his love. Besides this, a hot scene between Nikita wearing a shirt and Karan was picturised at the swimming pool.

Hansratein, was one of those serials that for the first time showed a love making scene on Indian Television. The serial starred Harsh Chhaya in the lead role! The scene was picturised between Himani Shivpuri and her lover, who gets involved into a relationship inspite of being a married woman!

Some other serials that broke the barriers were Lipstick, a show by Rose Productions that dealt with issues like Gay love and many such scenes were shown on television in the 11 O' clock prime time slot.

The changing content had taken Indian viewers by surprise and much to the amazement of the serial makers the change was very much accepted and welcomed by the audiences.
