Ten-day Jain festival of Daslakshan begins
Ten-day Daslakshan festivals of the Jains started today with special prayers and sermons held in the Digantar Jain temples in Jaipur. The festival will cintinue till September 28.
DASLAKSHAN IS a festival of ten virtues celebrated by the Jains annually for self-purification and spiritual uplift. The festival works as the reminder for the ten universal virtues of Jainism: forgiveness, humility, honesty, contentment, truthfulness, self-restraint, austerities, renunciation, non-attachment and freedom from carnal desires.
These ten days are spent by the followers of Jainism with the practice in abstaining from all the pleasures provided by the five senses - touch, taste, smell, sight, and hearing; and the sixth sense - mind.
According to the followers, daily sermons on non-violence, forgiveness, contentment and self-restraint are held for self-purification. The study of Jain scriptures emphasizing the eternal truth on experiencing and realizing the true nature of soul are stressed.
The Jain community celebrates this festival with great zeal and joy and austerities viz. self-meditation, doing penance, fasting and study of Holy Scriptures are performed during the Parva.
On the last day of the festival a fast is observed followed by a closing ceremony with great devotion and gaiety.
