Ten-day residential workshop for bridge school teachers being organised at Jhilay in Tonk district of Rajasthan
A ten-day residential workshop for the female teachers and academic support staff for single-teacher bridge schools for elementary education of drop-out and non-starter Muslim girls is being held since May 20 at Jhilay in Rajasthan.

"The workshop is being held to produce self-learning material in the inductive learning mode for the teen-aged Muslim girls who will be reaching Class VI in the ensuing academic session. We have decided to start with adapted lessons for over-age girls which will have a paradigm shift from the earlier mode of deductive learning till grade five wherein a lot of experiences were give with examples to reach generalisation," said the resource person of the workshop.

He added, "The disciplinary approach to learning with self-learning material has been deemed effective at upper primary stage due to new provision of certification at Class VII through a common examination system in Rajasthan."

According to the field coordinator of Pehchan Project Rama Sharma of the bridge schools called Pehchanshalas, the residential training has been found effective due to the long hours required to produce the learning material for the schools being managed by single female teachers.

"The teachers remain busy till late hours to get ready with the self-learning material when schools reopen after short summer break to start with a bang," she said.

It has been founds that bridge schools and multi-grade schools succeed when a lot of self learning material is produced in a systematic way. The experience of Jaipur-based CULP-NGO has shown the curriculum structuring on multi-level or micro-learning non-graded instructional basis along with learning material can be successful for small schools.
