India lags behind in all these contexts. Had the governance in terms of these parameters been effective, India would have progressed very well. In that case, there would not have been a large number of terror groups, as they exist presently. Let us briefly dwell on this issue:
It is said that there are about 174 terrorist, insurgent and extremist groups in India, many of them are little known. They operate across India. The maximum number- 40- operate in Manipur, followed by 36 in Assam, 32 in Jammu and Kashmir, and 30 in Tripura. These figures are compiled by the South Asia Terrorism Portal. Punjab is home to 12 terror groups, Mehalaya houses four, Nagaland three, Mizoram two and Arunachal Pradesh one. The list also includes pan-India Left-wing groups like the People’s War Group and the Communist Party of India-Maoist, as also other extremist groups like the Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) and the Deendar Anjuman.
In Assam, the prominent among the 36 groups are United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA), National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB), Kamtapur Liberation Organisation (KLO), Karbi National Volunteers (KNV), Harkat-ul-Mujahideen, Harkat-ul-Jihad.
The prominent groups in Jammu and Kashmir are: Hizbul Mujahideen, Harkat-ul-Ansar (now known as Harkat-ul-Mujahideen), Lakshar-e-Taiba (LeT), Jaish-e-Mohammad Mujahideen- e- Tanzeem, Al Badr, Muslim Janbaz Force and Ikhwan-ul-Majahideen.
Punjab is dominated by Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), Khalistan Zindabad Force (KZF), Khalistan Commando Force (KCF), Bhindrawale Tigers Force of Khalistan (BTFK) and Dashmesh Regiment.
In Manipur, the main groups are: United National Liberation Front, People’s Liberation Army, People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (Prepak) which operate from the unified platform of the Manipur People’s Liberation Front (MPLF), Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP) and Kuki National Front (KNF).
Tripura is basically dominated by National Liberation Front of Tripura, All Tripura Tiger Force (ATTF) and Tripura Liberation Organisation Front.
In Nagaland, the three groups are: National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah), National Socialist Council of Nagaland (Khaplang) and Naga National Council (Adino).
The four groups of Meghalaya are: Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC), Achik National Volunteer Council, People’s Liberation Front of Meghalaya and Hajong United Liberation Army.
Mizoram is dominated by Bru National liberation Front and Hmar People’s Covention-Democracy.
Arunachal has one group called Arunachal Dragon Force.
All these groups do their work quietly, and spread lot of chaos in the country. In fact, the responsibility to control and fully eliminate them lies with the government. If no severe action is taken, in time to come India will have many more terrorist groups, and the basic virtues of a democratic society will get lost. It is really scaring to know that our country is always under the shadow of terror. Let us save India from this nightmare.
