Test championship most likely in 2017, postponed from 2013
The Test Championship has been rescheduled for 2017, which was originally scheduled to be played in 2013.

WITH THE dwindling support for Test cricket, there is a serious need for the longer format of the game to be polished in order to turn heads towards Test cricket. Hence, the ICC had come up with a Test championship, which was scheduled for 2013. Meanwhile, it has been reported by guardian.co.uk, that the championship has been postponed until 2017.

The ICC had also thought of replacing the champions trophy in 2013 with the Test championship, but later they realised they would not be able to replace it primarily due to the broadcasting rights, which has already been distributed. On the other hand, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), who has always held 5 days of Test cricket to be the best form of cricket, has been disappointed with the decision that has been taken by the ICC.

If we look at the recent crowds that had come to witness various Test matches around the world, it has been declining. People are more interested in the shorter format of the game, T20, which is considered to be an entertaining one. It is very difficult to get seats of an IPL match in the country (India) or a T20 international. The scene for Test matches in the same country is different, as the present Test match played between West Indies and India at the Eden Gardens has witnessed lots of empty seats, which was never been the scene in one of the best sporting venues in the country.

There have been many experts who consider the longer format of the game to be the test for any cricketer. One has to prove himself in white clothes, if he is to be considered a great player. Even players like Sehwag think the same. But, there is a serious threat to the existence of Test cricket so the ICC has to act swiftly, before we witness empty stands at venues around the world for Test cricket.
