Test your 'green' factor on World Green Day on March 26
India will participate in the Earth Hour on March 26 with people switching off lights from 8.30 to 9.30 pm. The Hour sends the message of living an eco-friendly life, and you can test how 'green conscious' you are on this day by conserving energy.
THIS YEAR India is observing the Earth Hour for the third consecutive year. On March 26, 2011 from 8.30 pm to 9.30 pm India will join over 126 nations across the world to observe Earth Hour, an international movement against climate change.

It is a combined effort to flick the switch off in a collective fight against climate change and global warming including the pledge towards protecting the one thing that connects our entire planet.

The Earth Hour is the perfect opportunity to reiterate and train oneself by inculcating daily habits of saving energy, and cause as less to the greenhouse effect as possible. This includes, remembering to switch off lights that are not in use; using just one light when two or more are on; not allow dripping water; optimising use of air-conditioners at around 24 degrees; and using less four-wheel travel as possible.

This is also the time when people should go beyond the Earth Hour, not just for one hour and commit towards more sustainable living every day. This year Earth Hour is reflected in the new ‘60+’ logo representing an obligation to add a positive act for the planet.

India’s historic buildings such as the India Gate, the Qutub Minar, Red Fort, Rashtrapati Bhawan, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal in Mumbai, Gateway of India, universities, cinema complexes and shopping malls, etc., are going to participate in the Earth Hour. It is extraordinary example of the how the action of just one individual really can make a difference and it all starts at home with just the flick of a switch.

In 2010, a record 1.3 billion individuals across 4,616 cities in 128 countries participated in the movement. Notable landmarks such as the Acropolis in Greece, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Hiroshima Peace Gardens in Japan, and the Pyramids in Egypt switched off their lights in response to the global support this movement has received.

By choosing to do the things that are mentioned in the list below not only during the Earth Hour or until the Earth Day but every day, we could make this planet a much better to place to live in. Take a few minutes ever yday to do one of the following:

1. Go Green and Save Power – Say goodbye to CFLs (Compact fluorescent lamps, now use LED (light Emitting Diodes) Lamps.
2. Use water wisely
3. Use public transport for one full day
4. Use re-usable shopping bags for shopping. Do not use plastic and paper bags.
5. Learn how to set the AC thermostat properly
6. Learn how to increase your gas mileage
7. Start a community garden
8. Learn rainwater harvesting
9.  Adopt solar water heating instead of a geyser
10. Re-use organic waste instead of filling up your garbage can and our landfills
11. Develop green projects to make your city eco-friendly
12. Donate/recycle your clothes and household items to charities
13. Learn to reduce pollution

There are lots of other things we can do to help spread the word about the importance of living light on the earth, conserving resources and making a difference. Let save our Earth, our home.
