The Earth Hour is the perfect opportunity to reiterate and train oneself by inculcating daily habits of saving energy, and cause as less to the greenhouse effect as possible. This includes, remembering to switch off lights that are not in use; using just one light when two or more are on; not allow dripping water; optimising use of air-conditioners at around 24 degrees; and using less four-wheel travel as possible.
This is also the time when people should go beyond the Earth Hour, not just for one hour and commit towards more sustainable living every day. This year Earth Hour is reflected in the new ‘60+’ logo representing an obligation to add a positive act for the planet.
India’s historic buildings such as the India Gate, the Qutub Minar, Red Fort, Rashtrapati Bhawan, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminal in Mumbai, Gateway of India, universities, cinema complexes and shopping malls, etc., are going to participate in the Earth Hour. It is extraordinary example of the how the action of just one individual really can make a difference and it all starts at home with just the flick of a switch.
In 2010, a record 1.3 billion individuals across 4,616 cities in 128 countries participated in the movement. Notable landmarks such as the Acropolis in Greece, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, Hiroshima Peace Gardens in Japan, and the Pyramids in Egypt switched off their lights in response to the global support this movement has received.
By choosing to do the things that are mentioned in the list below not only during the Earth Hour or until the Earth Day but every day, we could make this planet a much better to place to live in. Take a few minutes ever yday to do one of the following:
