The art of controlling the mind
In this modern age, people always remain stressful, plagued by anxieties and tension, and they do not know how to get rid of these problems. As a result, they always remain tense. This not only affects their work efficiency but also their personal and professional lives.

How can one remain stress-free? This is a curious question and everyone wants to know the answer. Let us first examine the scenario in which we are living.  We are living in a modern society plagued by murder, unemployment, corruption, divorce, violence, rape, suicide, communal violence, public unrest, and terrorism etc. Making things worse, these ills of the modern society are steadily increasing.

A Time magazine poll recently said that the main problems facing the society today are crime and lack of morality. There is an exceptional increase in crime rate in all the countries of the world. The number of prison population in the US in 1980 was 400, 000 and in 2000 the figure touched 1, 200, 000. Number of guns sold in 1977 was 10, 000 only and in 2001 it reached to 600, 000 which is really an astounding figure.

Average number of reported rape cases in South Africa in a year is 33,000. Before finishing school an average child watches 10,000 acts of violence. The number of drug users in European Union is 7.4 million. Number of divorces per 100 marriages in the US is 55; in Canada, it is 40 and in Denmark it is 45.

Approximate number of suicides in Japan every year is 22,500; in the US the number of attempted suicides in every year is 650,000. IT city Bangalore got the dubious name of number one suicide city of India. The number of reported suicides in Bangalore for the year 2000 was 1938.

So are we really advancing in the right direction? Why don’t these people live in peace? Why is there so much chaos and confusion in the society? Those who are doing all these nefarious activities might have lost control over their minds. As a result, they lack confidence, loss of trust, depression, stress, hypertension, dangerous diseases and weak determination.

An uncontrolled mind is susceptible to alcohol, gambling, murder, rape, drug, picking quarrels, suicide etc. How can there be happiness and peace of mind when there are so many negative things happening all around us?

To control the mind, we have to take recourse to scriptures. On the subject of art of mind control, Bhagawad Gita has also mentioned several slokas. In Bhagawad Gita, Arjuna says to Krishan:

chanchal hi manah krishna pramaathi balavaddhridham ||

tasyaaham nigraham manye vayoriva sudshkaram ||

(Mind is very restless, forceful and strong, O Krishna, it is more difficult to control the mind than to control the wind.)

The mind is so strong and obstinate that it sometimes overcomes the intelligence, although the mind is supposed to be subservient to intelligence. In Katha Upanishad, it said that individual is the passenger in the car of the material body and intelligence is the driver. Mind is the driving instrument, and the senses are the horses. The self is thus enjoyer and sufferer in the association of mind and senses.

Krishna in return tells Arjuna that it is undoubtedly difficult to control restless mind but it is possible by practice and detachment. By practice we must know that Krishna wants us to take Bhakti Yoga. We should engage our mind in the service of God or Lord Krishna. There will be no other engagement of mind. As a result, other negative tendencies will not come to our mind and our mind will remind cool and controlled.

Again by detachment, Krishna means to disassociate one’s mind from material things and engage the mind and spirit. One should engage the mind in devotional life of Lord Krishna. Certain steps for keeping mind in good stead are:

- To control the mind one should not sense to wander stray in any direction they want,

- Withdraw your mind from wrong engagement,

- Engage the sense and mind in topics of God.

- Understand meaning of life by reading thought provoking books like Bhagawad Gita written by AC Bhakti Vedanta Swami Prabhupad.

- Try to associate with spiritual minded people,

-Make best use of opportunities in good association.

Certain steps to purify the sense

- Hear audio lecture tapes and bhajan

- Visit temple and have darshan of deities

- Honour and relish Prasadam

- Chant Holy name of God, Specially Holy Maha Mantra

Hare Krishna Hare Krishna Krishna Krishna Hare Hare

Hare Rama Hare Rama Rama Rama Hare Hare

Follow four regulative principals in life

- No Illicit sex

- No Intoxication

- No Meat eating

- No Gambling

Just follow these rules and see what happens to your mind, and how it remains in your control.
