The big and the little of huge music performances with Andy Gill
The acclaimed producer dishes on behind the scenes of the EMAs and Spotify's original music production.

Being a mega successful music artist means making the performance and the moment special regardless of the size of venue. The same rule applies to the way these performances are captured for viewers whether in person, on television, or online. Producer Andy Gill has a shared experience with the famed artists he's worked with in terms of making something extraordinary in both the smallest and most massive of locations. The Manchester native has an impressive resume in reality TV hits like Made in ChelseaI'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, and the new Netflix series Dating Around, but he has a soft spot for music and those who make it. As a producer for the MTV EMAs and the Spotify Bedroom World Tour, Andy has proven that it's the size of the talent rather than the stage which is paramount?but it's nice to have it all.

The MTV Europe Music Awards is one of, if not THE most coveted, acclaimed, and premier awards shows worldwide. Broadcast in all of MTV's international territories, the most celebrated and popular music artists attend this annual production. The show is a barometer of where music has been and where it is headed. Andy Gill has been a regular part of this event since 2005. In hosts cities such as Munich, Liverpool, Milan, and others, Gill has created everything from comedy sketches to nominations packages with artists like Madonna, the Foo Fighters, Coldplay, Alicia Keys, Coldplay, and Taylor Swift. He admits, "International awards shows like this can be mildly terrifying at times but that's ultimately part of the fun!  What I enjoy the most is that they're a real spectacle."

One of the most unique music productions Andy has produced was the Bedroom World Touroriginal series for Spotify. This eight-part live music series was a part of their first original content push. Emerging artists such as Betty Who, Charlie Puth, Daya, Olivia Holt, and others were invited to give an acoustic performance. The unique twist of the show was that these artists were surprised as a team of art directors and set designers had recreated their childhood bedrooms as a stage for them to perform on. The idea of returning to an exact replica of the environment which launched the music journey of these artist elicited a profound response. Gill recalls, "The really nice thing about the show was that all of the artists immediately recognized the rooms we had recreated.  Right before we shot, I had a moment where I thought they might not have realized what we were going for but I needn't have worried because they were all delighted by the surprise. Bea Miller cried when she saw what we had made.  She has a really close relationship with her mum and was really touched that her mum had given us so much detail about her childhood bedroom. Olivia Holt's father came to set to surprise her.  Again she was really overwhelmed with the recreation we had made and then to have him there really tipped her over the edge. We had to stop filming for a few minutes so she could stop crying."

Andy's work, from BAFTA award-winning series Made in Chelsea and I'm a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here, to MTV productions TRL, the EMAs, and MTV2, as well as similar projects for the BBC, testify to the application of his talents for vastly different tones on differing subjects. Rock stars to Reality stars, Andy Gill enjoys the process of helping them all become relatable and looking good while doing so.
