The British School, New Delhi, recently organized the 'The Big Science Bang' science fair recently. This event was the culmination of a month long journey where students of ages five to thirteen spent time soaking in the rich experiences from their science classes.
WHILE teachers carefully planned and worked with young students, students also worked on their own ideas. Towards the last phases of the preparation older students of year 12, worked with the younger ones, listening to their explanations, inspecting their projects, and displays, lending expert advice and a helping hand. On display were projects, working models, experiments and displays that were based on a scientific principle or investigated a scientific concept.
There were some projects that were based on “magic with science”. Some of the more ambitious projects ranged from innovations, practical application of science at home, alternative sources of energy and even ideas for disaster management and rescue missions. The promising young minds charmed visitors with their enthusiasm and confidence. They explained the principles behind their projects as visitors ranging from younger siblings, to friends, parents, grandparents and teachers experienced the wonders of science. The students spoke with confidence and conviction and what emerged was a great testimony to the rich benefits of inquiry and collaboration.
Some of the notable projects displayed were “Wind Powered Churner” for making your favorite milk shake, “Foamy Fountain” to lift your spirits, “Lava Lamp” for lighting up your special dinner party, “Elephant’s Toothpaste” for that wow effect, “Rescue Probes” a mission that quickly detects earthquake victims under rubble, “Fun to make Yummy Ice Cream” when mummy is away, “Butterfly in a spring garden”- fun with magnets, “The Earth, The Stars and a Golf Ball”- a space show. The students who worked on the projects as well as the visitors had an experiential learning that is so true to the discipline of science. In the words of Edwin Powell Hubble, “Equipped with his five senses, man explores the universe around him and calls the adventure science”- The Nature of Science, 1954.
