Media is considered the watch dog of society but it has to be awake to watch. If it were awaken then there would not have been all pervasive corruption. The extent of corruption is such that millions of people have been forced to embrace Naxalism.
INDIAN MEDIA, particularly the electronic media, is obsessed with everything that is frivolous but glamorous. If you read a leading English newspaper known for its anti-establishment stance, then there is no point to switch on your television because most media outlet followed the story already carried by it and they somehow procured some visuals and keep repeating them endlessly.
This is similar to our political system where you have to vote for the same set of politicians and parties because you have restricted choice. So when you have an option of viewing the Indian Premier League you feel happy to have a choice and are not forced to listen to the cacophony made out on ever news network by some pretty ladies.
Media is considered the watch dog of the society but it has to be awake to watch. If it were awaken then there would not have been all pervasive corruption. The extent of corruption is such mind boggling that millions of people have been forced to embrace Naxalism and take up arm against the state. Around ninety per cent of state funds meant for welfare and development are appropriated and pocketed by corrupt politicians, bureaucrats and their aids. Poor and ordinary persons are only given promises and promises. If there were fifty newspapers like the ‘Indian Express’ then the ground reality of India would have been very different.
The way the entire media hounded a junior minister, Shashi Tharoor, is unprecedented. Shashi Tharoor was hounded because he represents the suave upper echelons of the society. He has made his mark internationally and expressed his views openly on twitter.
It is alright in India to indulge in corruption and amass hundreds of millions of dollars by dubious means. There would be barely half a dozen politicians who would be exception and have not benefited themselves through dubious means. Otherwise thousands of politicians at the state and center level who have made themselves obscenely rich by dubious means would have attracted some attention as well. But media is all for sensationalism; not for any substance.
If Tharoor was accused of just impropriety then the matter would have gone unnoticed. But he did the unthinkable. He was seen in pubic with an attractive lady whom he intends to marry. This was such a shock that shook the Indian government, establishment and the opposition.
The government would not have been able to dictate his personal affairs so the issue of propriety was feed to the news channels and after few days of melodrama he was made to resign.
He was charged that he allegedly, used his official influence to benefit his friend. A third party would have paid the amount to his friend over a period of ten years against her services as a brand consultant to the Kochi IPL Franchise. Considering her experience and expertise that is not an astronomical sum in today's corporate world.
The lady Sunanda Pushkar would have earned INR70 crore over a period of ten years. She was not paid the cash upfront and was offered a sweet equity.
Sunanda is a Dubai based marketing professional and has been forced to give up her stake in the Kochi IPL. Sashi Throor was also forced to resign.
The question here is that is Tharoor the only person who has been accused of misusing his office? The truth is that there would be only few who would be above board. There are ministers in this government who have allegedly duped the government of tens of thousands of crores. But Indian media is silent. Media should show guts and expose the sharks. Will they dare ever?
