The Budding Turks: Doing business needs to be made easy

The World Bank report 'Doing Business 2012', rates India poorly on indicators of business environment. According to the Doing Business report, India ranks 132th out of 183 countries on conducive business environment.

I OFTEN interact with budding and young entrepreneurs at various business conferences I regularly attend. Many of them confide in me that they have been asked for bribes in order to obtain licences or permits from government officials and many of them are convinced that most companies are involved in bribery to acquire government contracts.

On one hand the government acknowledges the role played by entrepreneurs in development of Indian economy and has initiated several ambitious schemes to unleash entrepreneurship on the country and on other hand it seems to make it difficult for budding entrepreneur to start or sustain a business successfully.

The World Bank report ‘Doing Business 2012’, rates India poorly on indicators of the business environment. According to the Doing Business report, India ranks 132 th out of 183 countries on conducive business environment. When it comes to “Doing Business” India world’s fastest emerging economy may learn few tips from its neighbours ie Pakistan and Sri lanka.

The least the government can do to encourage a conducive business environment is to ensure simplified startup processes; improve delivery time; reduce corruption and collate informational needs of start-ups.
