Hot summers are upon us and the capital city is likely to face water shortage once again as two major water projects of Delhi government have not been completed. Authorities should adopt innovative ways to conserve water to avoid shortage.
WITH THE temperature rising, Delhi stares at a water crisis. Recently, a newspaper reported that water projects have got stuck, and Delhi would be facing yet another water crisis during summer. The capital city is entirely dependent upon its neighboring states for water.
Since the two projects may not be completed, officials have started advocating water conservation measures.
One of the major reasons of this water crisis can be the water that comes during the monsoon season, and is allowed to flow away since there the demand is low during the season as well as there is no provision for storing it. A large quantity of water is wasted and thrown away everyday. Building a soakage pit can be adopted to recycle the waste water. A soakage pit is a pit filled with different sizes of stones or broken bricks, through which the waste water filters down and is soaked into the ground. This not only avoids water stagnation but also helps in water percolation. Such pits can be built near a place where there are high chances of water wastage from nearby pumps, drinking water or washing areas Moreover, the concerned authority needs to device a way to conserve rain water during the rainy season so that the rain water can be stored and be used for future purposes when the need arises. This will also make the city a more water reliable city instead of being totally depending on its neighbors for its water supply.
