The diminishing content quality of Indian TV serials: From Saas-bahu to Naagins and Daayans
There was a time when my mother used to watch TV serials like she performs 'puja' everyday. She had her fix time slot to enjoy daily television soaps and during those hours, no one was supposed to make any noise or touch the TV remote. In fact, she was the only ardent fan of years-old saas-bahu dramas in my family. But the last time I visited her, the situation had changed.

Seeing her sitting idly instead of watching her favorite soap, I asked her out of curiosity, "Mom, why are you not watching your TV soap? Her reply was, "There is nothing worth watching. They are showing complete nonsense these days."

Indian serials never made sense to me, but thank god, my mom who is a housewife and entirely relies on TV for her daily dose of entertainment, too realizes it. Today, nothing is more torturous than watching a daily soap. And this sorry state of affairs is worsening even further with each passing day, due to highly disgusting story lines and bewildering content.

The most distressing part is the frequently used newest trend of supernatural concepts that are currently ruling the small screen. It is making the situation even more miserable at a time when we need more and more thought provoking ideas and scripts to bring some much needed change in the mindset of people and spread awareness on socially relevant issues.

In the current scenario, when a highly progressive approach is required to bring about some refinement in society, what we are being offered with are superstitious concepts of 'naagins', 'daayans,' 'witches' 'vishkanyas,' and even 'bhoots,' apart from repetitive mythological stories, some crime shows based on real life stories, decades old saas-bahu dramas, and abundance of Bollywood. If you ever stop by on a Hindi entertainment channel while surfing channels of your idiot box, you will realise what I am talking about.

Just try to bear through just one episode of the serial `Naagin' which airs on the TV channel Colors to get an exact idea on how worse TV content has diminished to.

After observing the content that these Indian TV serials are currently offering, it would not be wrong to say that they are promoting regressive thoughts and superstitions. The pseudo-creative people who should contribute towards educating and enlightening people with a medium that has strongest reach, are promoting crap and utter-nonsense.

These pathetic serials air 24x7 even though being miles apart from logic. In fact, they have everything to offer but entertainment. These 'daayan', 'naagin' themes are decades old and we have seen them in many Bollywood films like 'Nagina', 'Nigahen', and 'Zehreeli' during the 80s and 90s. Now, the show makers must realise that times have changed. Why these TV serial makers are pushing the Indian audience backwards and spreading false beliefs and irrationality, is beyond my understanding!

While some shows have been airing since more than one year and still do not seem to end, a few others don't offer any newness as their plots have been borrowed from the older TV soaps by adding more awkward twists and masala (at least in their language). Look at the show, 'Swaragini,' that is inspired from 'Sapna Babul Ka Bidaai.' Another example is 'Kaala Teeka' that is a rehash of 'Uttaran'. The old ones have already ruled the TV screens for years and now we are watching the same repetitive content under a new name. Classic examples of old wine in a fancy new bottle.

The question which surfaces here is, where has the freshness and creativity gone? Why TV serial producers and directors are creating such nonsensical trash and for whom? Does the Indian audience seem so dumb to them or they are failing to understand the tastes of this generation. In present circumstances it can be said that these TV soap creators hardly seem bothered about innovation and richness of the content.

After decades gone by of watching of kitchen politics and stale romance stories, I hope that the day comes in the lives of these TV serial makers that they realise the need of today's audience and offer them some fresh new shows.

In fact, this is the reason why today's generation prefers foreign TV shows like Quantico, Game of Thrones, Big Bang Theory or even YouTube videos as an alternative to this Indian TV crap, as they are much more logical.

In fact, Pakistani serials that are now airing on the TV channel `Zindagi' are far more creative, rich in content, practical and engaging. Honestly, there's can be no comparison between Pakistani serials and Indian soaps. One has to admit, their shows are way ahead in all aspects, be it content, script, characters, storytelling or issues that they raise through serials. Watch the channel `Zindagi' and you will realise the difference.

TV serial can be used as a revolutionary medium to change the circumstances in dealing with social evils prevalent in society; to make a change in a positive manner; to highlight the good and bad of the society; to inform; to educate; and to entertain, but, what our TV shows broadcast is the exact opposite.

While the negative impact of this kind of content is bare minimum on urban Indians, just think about the people living in rural areas who are unaware of the realities of life and lack basic knowledge. Isn't this kind of content spreading superstitions like 'naags, naagins and daayans' among them?

Currently, I cannot name even a single daily soap that has even a slight semblance of reality, and neither do they raise any social issues. These pseudo creative people are busy producing the same 'shit' again and again. And surprisingly, the people involved in creating such crap believe that what they are offering is apt for the audience.

The TRPs on such shows are on the rise from areas that lack awareness and just follow suit. Hence, it's high time that these TV serial producers and all those involved in production should put their foots down and stop producing such retard shows and realize their responsibility towards society. For the sake of society, I humbly request the concerned people, that if you can't fight evil, at least stop spreading it!
