The 'dugdugi' campaign of policing is a big success in Bihar
The name of the campaign may sound funny but the dugdugi campaign is very effective as Bihar Police is trying to nab culprits by hunting them down with the help of a drummer and the citizens of the state.

BIHAR, LAND of brilliant intellectuals has brought this time, not an innovative idea but a renovated idea to nab criminals. The state police is trying out a new method to apprehend chronic criminal offenders. What they do is that they move about with a drummer into the suspect’s locality and start drumming in the vicinity. They also announce the name and other details like description of the crook - making all relevant information public.

Anybody seeing this for the first time would think that the law enforcers are providing some idle delight to the common public and enjoying their own nautanki. It may seem that the police is not getting down to some hard work. Nevertheless, the ‘dudgdugi campaign’, as it is known, will continue to cover the police list of absconders, especially ones who have changed their location and names.

According to a senior police official, in the last ten days or so the police have organized the drum shows in around 950 places in and around Patna. The result - more than one hundred out of the 2000 or so fugitives have been caught in the past few days. Apart from this, in several areas, including Sigodi, Rania Talab, Gandhi Maidan areas - dozens of absconders surrendered voluntarily by presenting themselves at police stations.

What makes the dudgdugi method effective is the attention of the public becomes attuned to keep a lookout for the described criminals. Once the police have their attention, names and details about the deserter are declared on mikes. What follows is volunteering of information from the citizens of the locality, those who are familiar with the geography and demography of the area.

The same method seems to work in the countryside. The essential components of this inventive method have something in common with social networks in cyberspace like Facebook – sharing of information and willingness to cooperate. That is all it takes to find innovative ways to make policing more effective and systematic instead of blind and haphazard chase after the shadowy criminals and offenders.

According to Rahul, a resident of Gandhi Maidan, ”When I saw this activity I thought it to be a film shooting but later on realized that it’s real. This enterprise reminds me of the conventional mediu and Bihar police is doing very good. He also added, “just in case you see a role for dudgdugi magic please put your overtime imagination at rest.”
