EARTH HOUR is a global event organized by WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) and is held on the last Saturday of March annually, as a campaign. Prior to the event, households and businesses are urged to turn off their non-essential lights and other electrical appliances for one hour to raise awareness towards the need to take action on climate change in order to mitigate its effects and pledge support for protecting the environment.

• Conceived by: WWF and the Sydney Morning Herald in 2007 • First event response (2007): 2.2 million residents of Sydney participated by turning off all non-essential lights. • 2008: Following Sydney's lead, 400 cities around the world took part in the event.
• 2009: 88 countries and 4,088 cities participated in the event. • 2010: The event will take place on March 27, 2010 from 8:30 pm to 9:30 pm local time.
