HERE COMES spring time for all sports fanatics! This year, the summer indeed has a lot to offer. The following week will be meeting the pinnacle of extravagance in the sporting arena. All the three major sporting categories will cash in the best of what they can offer and all will present the highest and the most prized of their tournaments. All biggest names in the business are up for action – be it football’s mighty legends like Ballack and Torres; or counting on cricketing icons like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni or even the explosive Sanath Jayasuriya; and the people clamping their expertise to the front and the back hands – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Maria Sharapova and Venus Williams.

With cricket making it big, as the ninth edition of the Asia Cup commences on the June 24, Lawn Tennis will be presenting the largest and the most valued of its tournaments - the Wimbledon - that instigates on June 23. The enthralling semi final of the Euro 2008 (European Championship) followed by the final to be played on the June 29, it indeed is going to be a definite treat for sports freaks to capture the best times in the sporting arena.

Cricket finally gets a chance to cook its Asian flavours in the pan with six countries battling it out for the tournament of 2008. These nations include the T20 champions: India, the team that beat India to claim the Kitply Trophy: Pakistan, the World Cup 2007 runner-ups Sri Lanka, followed by Bangladesh, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Hong Kong. The tournament will be hosted by Pakistan for the second time (after 1993), with Bangladesh and the UAE locking horns in the opening match.

As for the group-wise allocation, the format constitutes two groups of three sides each, where Group A entails Bangladesh, Sri Lanka and United Arab Emirates, Group B consists of Pakistan, Hong Kong and India.

Meanwhile, tennis fans will witness the annual Wimbledon Championship. Since Rafael Nadal’s triumph over the Roland Garros territory, it has become a formidable task for the top seed Roger Federer to claim his pride back. However, Federer has broken the shackles when it comes to Wimbledon championships – standing tall five consecutive times on the Wimbledon grass, emulating Bjorn Borg.

Amongst the women favourites, Venus Williams would be coming into this year’s Wimbledon as the defending champion. Maria Sharapova and sister to the title holder - Serena Williams - follow close behind.

Last but certainly not the least, the European Championship 2008 has entered in the final episode of its drama with the four semi finalists: Germany, Turkey, Russia and Spain. In the last leg, the tournament has encountered upsetting dramas with the German despair in their quarter final match. And somehow holding on to reserve their seat in the semis against Portugal, Turkey knocked out Czech Republic with a highly controversial yet emphatic triumph with a sensational last minute goal to equal the score line. This was followed by the Turkish dominance in the penalties. Russia outwitting the formidable Dutch, who held a comprehensive, cent percent record in their league games; and Spain sweetly knocking out the reigning world champions Italy in a nail biting penalty encounter are some of the highlights of the tournament.

June 25 will see the Germans combating against the Turkish ‘last minute’ menace, and the mighty Russians tugging a war against Spain on the following day - June 26. The final of the tournament will kick off on Sunday (June 29).
