The fair taboo
We are somehow being fed on the 'fact' that real beauty comes from being fair the cosmetic industry embraces such ideas, the proverb- 'Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder' seems a strange consolation for the desperate hearts.
THE RECENT 'Fair and Lovely for men' advertisement aired on television, left me in splits. Men? Do they really care about looking fair? Or has the day arrived for men to overtake women as the biggest consumer of beauty product? I belong to anti-fairness bandwagon that completely endorses the idea of 'true dark Indian beauty’, but society at large does not think so. It is not surprising; therefore, that manufactures are only too happy to produce such products and the speed at which they disappear from market shelves is simply astounding.

We are somehow being fed on the 'fact' that real beauty comes from being fair the cosmetic industry embraces such ideas, the proverb- ‘Beauty lies in the eye of the beholder’ seems a strange consolation for the desperate hearts. A little shade fairer and you could get your dream career with the special bonus of impromptu marriage proposals. So, what are you waiting for?

Incidentally I came across the product in my father's hand. My first reaction was why does u need it, that too at fifty? But then, who said life stops at fifty. I am proud of the fact that I got my brown skin from my father- my stamp of identity. On being questioned, my father replied that he needed some cream and what could he lose if it also made him look 'fair' period.

Days went by and the result was as anticipated. It didn't work for my father as it had not for my cousin (who had used it religiously for seven years).Over a period of time, it has come as a revelation to me that there are a lot of men who have used the product, or are using it on a regular basis.

The home truth is 'Beauty is all in the mind’. Today the definition of beauty ranges from fair to brown; thin to fat; tall to short. These are, however, conceptions created by the society. The irony is not missed here-fair skinned people (Westerners) have this fad to go tan (to give some exotic look); some want to lose weight, while others are desperate to gain some; some want curly hair, others straighten theirs- the list goes on. More people are brain-washed into thinking that success depends a lot on good grooming. Point taken, but my question is- how far can we stretch the limit?

Friends, I have come to the conclusion-why should men be spared from using beauty (fairness) products? So go ahead men...keep rocking!
