The first women half marathon to take place in Mumbai on March 11
'I Can Women's Half Marathon', an event organised by DNA newspaper will see around 5000 participants in the event. Jitendra Joshi, CEO for Sportz Consult, an event partner for the marathon, talked to merinews.com about the upcoming historic event.
“THE MARATHON would provide an opportunity for women of different age groups and make them believe that I can do this," said Jitendra Joshi, CEO for Sportz Consult, while speaking to merinews.com, The ‘I Can Women's Half Marathon', which is an initiative of DNA, is scheduled to take place at Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai on March 11. Around 5000 women will be participating in the event.
The event might also witness internationals runners, as the organizers have received requests from them too, said, Joshi. The three primary reasons for hosting such an event is for the education of a girl child, women's safety in public places and awareness of cervical cancer. Various celebrities such as
Dia Mirza, John Abraham, Rahul Bose have also endorsed the event.
The runners would be involved in different race categories such as Spirit run, which would only be of 10 kms, Fun run of 5 kms and the main race, Half-Marathon of 21 kms. For those who want to participate in Spirit run and Half-Marathon, need to be 18 years and above. For Fun run, it is just 12 years. Joshi said. “If we have more race categories, there will be more participants during the race”. Each participant has to pay Rs 350 to participate in the race.
The organisers are still in the lookout for sponsors, as they want to provide some special awards to the participants like the oldest participant. Though, as of now they have decided to hand over a prize money of around 2-3 lakhs for the winner of the Half marathon. The prize amount might increase, depending on the sponsors.
The organizers plan to utilize 100 hoardings in Mumbai to promote the first-ever Half Marathon for Women and put up promotional messages by the end of this week.
