Government promises that this action is serious and entire structure responsible for organising the Games has now been placed under investigation. It has still to see that whether accountability will be fixed and the guilty be brought to the books.
BY SUCCESSFULLY organising a mega sporting event and by crossing a century of medals, India has shown just one side of Indian growth story. At the same time as a nation India also has shown that it is engrossed deep in corruption and we have not changed much in adopting corrupt practices to fill the treasury.
The run-up to the Games was full of allegations, tales of corruption, budget overruns and a significant chorus picked up against the event. The global media took advantage and exposed India's much cited inefficiency and lack of coordination. However, post the Games, the system has swung into action and numerous investigating agencies have moved in. The Comptroller and Auditor General, Income Tax authorities, India’s corruption watchdog, Central Vigilance Commission (CVC) has in its preliminary investigation of Commonwealth Games works in the Capital, found indications of pervasive corruption by virtually all the government organisations involved in executing the works.
Even retired investigators have been summoned. Government promises that this action is serious and entire structure responsible for organising the Games has now been placed under investigation. It remains to be seen whether accountability will be fixed and the guilty are brought to book. On other hand by demonstrating their zeal, the investigating agencies have plucked out some errant companies and even raided a BJP leader. This cycle of action and counter-reaction is not the way of mature democracies with functioning parts. Indian government has decades of experience in delaying and diverting such probes and blunting their edge by finding a scapegoat or two. The need of hour is that government should check faulty systems instead of raising finger on a few.
