The Indian media and the media of the West has failed the issue of Hindus in Kashmir for long.
I heard stories from time to time of bullying and coercion and demoralizing of the whole generation of the KPs. The government was set to dole out reservations to a community that was actually a majority and by no means marginalized. To keep quiet was the only means of survival, and when things were intolerable they had to leave because there was no mechanism to save the people in their homeland, hence they became not only displaced but tourists in years to come. With no one to call except God, they had to suffocate their wails of loss and pangs of separation. Such an instance is unheard of in any history of the modern day world. Nothing was heard of or reported by the press. Instances of personal threats to film starlet were presented to the Indian people in a deceptively decorous manner. In free India the government cannot fight terrorism in the name of secularism; ghoulish acts of vandalism go unreported. The sane should keep mum. If according to few people Narendra Modi
has tarnished the Indian image, what is Geelani doing repeatedly?
What is the difference between the killings of Gujarat
and Kashmir? Kashmir has been alienated from the rest of India. In Gujarat, things returned to normalcy and media did not abandon it completely Reporting is generally censored. In Gujarat the petering out did not work as the Indians are not tourists here Kashmir is another territory, there are only two kinds of people seen the residents (mostly muslims) and the tourists besides the army deployment. There are several ‘tourist’ footnotes that uphold the rights of the marginalized ones. We hear ‘tourist observations’ by the experts such as Ms. Arundhati Roy. She should not go as a tourist but one like them in Hijab to see the unveiled truth. In Kashmir (Srinagar) any Indian is a Hindustani, and they asked this obnoxious question, “Are you from Hindustan?”.I felt betrayed in my own country at this question.
Years later another person recounted a similar incident. It was all a case of snuffing out any hope of Indian claim on Kashmir, it was not a question of kasmiriyat, it was the Kashmir experience of reorientation where being an Indian becomes a ridicule. It is here the government of India provides every kind of subsidy. It will always be the upsetting problem child. Can’t this problem dealt with resolve and firmness. How long do we get tormented by this ancient demon. All the problems of India are basically eruptions of the Kashmir problem. It is not a regional problem, it is a non secular problem. The Kashmiri Muslims too leave Kashmir but that is due to outward compulsion of a better life and opportunities, they are doing very well in different fields.
We hear tourism is back, but when did it leave Kashmir? In an approximate estimation it is a business
running in several crores. Indian governance is at subaltern level. The political ‘crass’ is eating into India’s nationalist spirit. The secularist, the pseudo-secularist, the communists and the radicals have all failed India. There is social selection, sophistry and intellectual banter is all about how to perceive ourselves through the other’s eye. How can we be good neighbours. Don’t “good fences make good neighbours” (courtesy R. Frost)! India is a nation of composite cultures. Post-independence, the trauma of partition visits us in these apparitions of bigotry, insolvency and parochialism be it the slogan of “Mumbai for mumbaikars” or ‘Assam for Assamese”. These voices of rancour and dissent and the ideology of being unsafe with diversity is a gangrenous gnash. ‘My Name is Khan’ is revelatory of the trauma of ghettos created by the dangerous fear psychosis post bombings of the twin towers in the US. In India both Shahrukh Khan
and Amitabh Bachchan
had to face the brunt of devisive forces. The fascists, the trouble makers are just like the unbridled ‘thugs’ of yore, during the British regime. Shahrukh was in the midst of a controversy for being proud of his name, his roots. He was targeted and even an asylum was benignly proffered.
The sign of progressive Indian mindset is that you merge your personal identity with the national. The truly national are not religious but secular. But Indians besides being followers of spiritualism are religious hence the Indian state provides for the Haj, which should actually be performed by one’s hard earned money. Ironically, only one religion is shown this largesse by the politicians. So that your neighbor feels loved you should not take pride in the display of any fondness towards customer or tradition, the Hindu identity should be veiled and the north Indians by that rule should generally be secularists and reformists. If one has the right to say I am proud Muslim nationalist Indian, the other should not confess it publically, hence be disgraced and fall from all grace. The hindu and muslim friendships and marriages are a reality. Can any friendship survive any animosity, or bear ill will towards the religious practice of keeping a roza or of compassion. More non-believers of the same faith visit the churches or the dargahs. What brings them together on these places and on Eid or Deepawali is the faith of oneness and celebration of diversity. This reminds me of Shylock’s speech :
“I am a Jew. Hath not a Jew eyes? Hath not a Jew hands, organs, dimensions, senses, affections, passions? Fed with the same food, hurt with the same weapons, subject to the same diseases, healed by the same means, warmed and cooled by the same winter and summer as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh.”
In a similar vein he speaks of the villainy of hate and of his desire to take revenge. Someone has rightly mentioned as Pakistan benefitting from proxy war on India and this talibanisation of India. We are under perpetual threat from even internal forces. The corrupt politicians are brazen and refuse any reforms. They are accused in heinous crimes and in extortions. They have muscle power and they issue open threats if their monopoly or power is challenged by an aam admi. They try to control the judiciary and flout court rulings. They threaten and bamboozle any efforts of strengthening India as a nation. Reports on national security threats on various politically mandated are suppressed. What is the biggest catch, democracy is a mobocracy in India. In the open house with Burkha Dutt, post Mumbai
attacks, Simi Gerewal had pointed at Pakistani flags being furled in shanties and parts of Mumbai. You can still see them flying in Mumbai in 2013. In 27/11 people of all faiths were killed in attacks in public places, but the programme coordinator thought it to be a religion- sensitive issue and gagged her voice, by reprimanding her for being irresponsible as a citizen of India. It is time that we wake up as the true citizen of this nation to such national threat and let not any political party, be it Congress or BJP, sabotage the national harmony.
