The importance of celebrations
Celebrations allow us to relax and unwind in the midst of our mundane lives. We use them as an excuse to gather with the friends and family that mean that most to us. As we celebrate, we allow the stresses of life to fall behind, energising ourselves
AFTER COMING from the colourful entertainment feast 'Oasis 2009', I started thinking about the importance of celebrations in our life. These may be held on different occasions and may hold different meanings for everyone but, there are some common elements or motives behind such events.
There are many important things in life. Learning, growing, loving, and exploring are all things that each person should take time for. Celebration is another important thing for this list as it adds excitement and a lot of fun to life.
These celebrations can happen for a variety of formal or informal reasons. They can be in honour of someone's birthday, wedding, or the birth of a new baby. There is something deep inside humanity that loves to celebrate the best things in life. We love a good Christmas, Onam, Diwali or Eid celebration or other occasions that mark special holidays or family traditions.
These don't have to be reserved for the biggest events or holidays of the year though. As the majority of our days are spent doing routine or difficult tasks like working or travelling, we all need things to look forward to. These holiday and occasions ensure that we are energised and recharged with the change of mood.
Celebrations allow us to relax and unwind in the midst of our mundane lives. We use them as an excuse to gather with the friends and family that mean that most to us. As we celebrate, we allow the stresses of life to fall behind and we spend our time doing things we love with the people we love. There is something about a great celebration that reminds us of the purpose of our life and of the power of our closest relationships.
Celebrations at workplace are directly related to productivity, loyalty and job satisfaction. These keep the employees happy and energetic. Annual events reaffirm the company's belief that all employees are like one big family. Motivated employees lead to greater productivity and organisational success. These social events enhance employee loyalty too.
Different firms have different methods of celebrating occasions. Some do it through corporate gifts, some through special meals and feasts while, some celebrate by big parties on a particular day. Decorating cubicles, distributing gift vouchers and other coupons, organising contests, lucky draws, fun games and other merry making are a part of these celebrations.
The purpose here is not just to create a great work culture but also to motivate the employees and inculcate a sense of belonging among them. These celebrations also pave the path for social interactions among employees with diverse backgrounds. Such interactions break the barriers created by management hierarchies.
