The meaning of rationality - Part I
The word rationality has many connotations. The term is related to the idea of reason, a word which is derived as much from older terms, referring to thinking itself, as well as, from giving an account or an explanation.

HUMANS BEINGS have been separate from animals on the counts of emotions. When we refer to mankind, we often use phrases like "human kindness," "human frailty" etc. Our emotions and understanding of the world around us, due to these very emotions, separates us from primates and other animals.

We also perceive our own individualistic needs, that are often on a level of psychological attainment. Kindness, compassion and warmth are some of these needs. We are fond of life, like pleasure, hate pain, shun destruction and long to live. We are separate from the other ilk of this planet also, by our rationality.

The word rationality has many connotations. The term is related to the idea of reason, a word which is derived as much from older terms, referring to thinking itself, as well as, from giving an account or an explanation. To act "rationally" is to act in one's own best interest.

A player can be counted on using a strategy, that will get him/her the best possible pay off, as per their understanding of the game. This idea of "rational" behaviour is the basis for game theory, as a whole. It also refers to a decision making process in which one attempts to do the best one can for themselves , using the resources at one's disposal economically. It is a trait which individuals or collectives display in their thought, conduct or social institutions. Various features can be seen, singly or jointly, as marks or defining features of rationality.

However, rationality is a much broader term than logic, as it includes "uncertain but sensible" arguments based on probability, expectation, personal experience and the like, whereas logic deals principally with provable facts and demonstrably valid relations between them

Some people believe that it is the state of having good sense and sound judgement; the quality of being consistent with or based on logic. It reflects an agreement with reason, possession of reason and due exercise of reason. It is a process of rational inference; also linked with rational thought.

In different kinds of speech, "rational" may also denote several generally positive attributes including:
  • reasonable: "having sound judgement" reasonable:
  • "not extreme or excessive"
  •  justifiable on the basis of reason
  • not foolish
  • sane
  • good

The word has also been contrasted with emotional, creative, spiritual and the divine truth.
