HOW COULD we rate a programme in a television channel? Is by looking its style, its presentation, or anything else? Most of us will have the answer that viewership determines the rating of a programme. By looking in that perspective, which kind of programme is getting largest viewership now a days? Without much delay, we could say about reality shows.

Once, soap operas or serials were the most significant programme in television. Serials were engaged in stiff competition to get their names first in target rating point (TRP). But the golden period of serials came to an end mainly because of the lack of standard and secondly because of the advent of youth’s favourite programme, the reality shows.

There were serials in the past which had good stories and which depicted real life. ‘Humlog’, ‘Buniyad’, are some among them. But what is happening to today’s serials? Now-a-days, serials depict only nonsense and rubbishness which has no nearness to real life. Years back, people especially women audience liked to spend their prime time in front of the television. They viewed it with intense interest and with extreme anxiety. But today, women viewers are also fed up with the stupid time killing serials. This paves the way for mushroom booming up of reality show culture in India. As a result, reality shows grabbed the time in which serials were dominant for years.

Now, each and every channel has at least one reality show as part of its programme format. Reality shows are helping the channels to earn profit through advertisements and SMS voting. Viewers can’t imagine the bulk of profit channels are getting everyday. This is why channels are behind reality shows. Youngsters all over the world are fascinated and interested to show their faces in these kinds of shows because they are giving them money, fame and power within short span of time. One of the main advantages of reality shows is that youngsters are getting a very good opportunity to express themselves before lakhs and lakhs of viewers. Talented people are thus getting exposed through media.

But it is a fact that, quality and standard of reality shows are also declining day by day like serials. All channels are in competition in order to make their show number one. So, they are all ready to inject all rubbishness to increase the viewship. This may badly affect the standard.

Reality shows are good in the sense that it paves the way for thousands of youths and even for older generation to come in front of the podium, but at the same time, these kinds of shows may lead to generate hatred and unhealthy relations among participants.
