The quickest route to 'Queen of Hills' witnesses toll tax
The quickest route to the 'Queen of Hills' better known as Darjeeling has started charging toll since December 1, 2013. The Rohini road, which is a newly laid road connects Rohini to Kurseong town. The vehicle users have to pay toll for this stretch of 20 kms.

Toll is something, which is something very rare. It is for the first time that the GTA (Gorkha Territorial Administration) has imposed a toll charge for the route.

The road is gradually liked by travellers because it is in good condition and is the quickest path from Siliguri and merges with NH55 in Kurseong town. In order to maintain the raod in good condition, the GTA is collecting toll tax.

The toll tax is collected by a private agency, selected by the GTA officials and this agency has been given a contract for three years. This agency would pay Rs 1.8 crore every year to GTA under this contract. Many objections were raised by drivers and owners of trucks and pick-up vans about the toll rates.

Pratap Khati, General Secretary of Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League, said ''Since the entire amount in repairing the road has come from the government, it makes little sense to hand over the collection to a private agency, which will just be making profit.''

Jyoti Kumar Rai, the executive GTA Sabha member in charge of transport, said, ''Today, we decided to revise the rates for minibuses, pick-up vans and trucks. This is largely because the Chalak Mahasangh (a transport body in Kurseong) had raised objections,'' reported
